Alternatives for animal testing

The analysis of penetration properties of chemical or cosmetic compounds or potential medical active agents represents an important area in pharmaceutical development and basic research. Until recently, these studies were performed for the most part in isolated human epidermis and animal experiments. This practice was recently challenged by profound changes in the cosmetics and chemicals policy of the European Union (Regulation for the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH)), legally anchoring animal experiment-free methods for the assessment of the hazard potential of substances. Moreover, it has been recognized that xenograft activity is often not predictive of clinical efficacy.

Our bioartificial test systems offer the pharmaceutical and cosmetical research laboratories the possibility to test their products on human tissue without potentially jeopardizing probands. For the interests of both industries we are developing the following test systems:
